Thomas Edison, inventor, entrepreneur, industry disruptor

Thomas Edison was an extraordinary inventor and businessman. Believing that “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.” He revolutionized the way products were developed and produced. Edison was one of the first to apply mass production and teamwork to inventing. A prolific visionary he holds 1,093 US patents with more in the european nations.

His most famous contributions were to the fields of telecommunication (microphones), electrical power and light (lightbulbs), motion pictures, phonographs, and mechanical record keeping. Edison even developed one of the first electric power stations in Manhattan, New York which opened in 1882.

Growing up, Thomas Edison inspired me with his determination and the realization of his vision of providing residential electric power. From his Menlo Park laboratory (located less than an hour from my NJ hometown, River Edge), Edison initiated inventive and disruptive ripples that have had profound effects on our daily lives.

Some of my favorite Thomas Edison quotes include:

  • Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. ~ Thomas A. Edison
  • I never perfected an invention that I did not think about in terms of the service it might give others… I find out what the world needs, then I proceed to invent. ~  Thomas Edison
