Amazon.com has been an internationally acclaimed online retailing powerhouse for more than 2 decades. Yet, what many people don’t know is that the company owes a majority of its massive success to a million-square-foot factory shipping warehouse in Robbinsville, New Jersey. Staff work along highly advanced computers and robots around the clock to identify, sort, package, and ship goods all over the world. It is the 21st century model of efficiency, and a one-of-a-kind endeavor.
The Process
First, the products arriving to the warehouse are identified by computers which quickly catalogues the product’s size and weight into the tracking system. Next, human workers, assisted by 2,000+ robots, stock shelves with the merchandise according to a highly specified ordering system. When it comes time for shipping, the robots give the humans the perfect shipping boxes and all the necessary implements for maximum shipping efficiency. Then, before the product goes out to shipping trucks, a final check is made to ensure the correct product is going to the correct destination.
Amazon’s New Jersey warehouse is a well-oiled machine, because they realize just how important efficiency and quick delivery are to the success of their business.
